As with any elective cosmetic surgery, active smokers should avoid these procedures until you have quit smoking for at least 4 weeks, as the risk of wound healing complications is much higher and not worth it.

Your Consultation Appointment

Before your first visit, you will be asked to complete an intake form to document your personal and medical history, prior surgeries, medications, and allergies. For patients over the age of 40, please let us know if you have had a prior screening breast exam and/or mammogram and bring those results with you.

At your visit we will review your goals and concerns. You may bring in photos of other people’s breasts that you like to help us understand your size goals. Try to select photos of people with a similar body frame to yours.

We will also want to learn more specifically about any prior breast procedures you have had performed. We will examine your overall breasts and upper body from various angles to ensure we take into account the surrounding areas to maximize your breast appearance after surgery. We will also take photographs that will be used to help plan your surgery and track your progress after. You will have a chance to review these images and discuss the plan with us prior to surgery. While augmentation using breast implants is by far the most common method to achieve larger breasts, we also offer a minimally invasive technique for a subtle change in breast volume and shape. For patients with significant breast sagging, we may need to consider a breast lift in addition to breast augmentation.

Breast Augmentation with Implants

Placing an implant can add size and fullness to breasts while also providing some lift. Choosing the right implant is a personal choice. All conventional implants have a medical-grade silicone shell, with a variety of fillings to choose from.

Silicone gel filled implants are far safer now than they were in the past and are popular because they provide a feel that is more natural than traditional saline-filled implants. They come with a range of slightly cohesive silicone gel (softer) all the way up to form-stable (firm, gummy bear) silicone.
Saline-filled implants are preferred by patients who are concerned about needing to monitor their implants down the road. If saline leaks it can create less of a problem than silicone.
In our practice we are proud and excited to have adopted the Ideal implant, one that feels like a silicone-filled implant but is instead filled with saline so you do not have to worry about implant monitoring – in our opinion it provides the best of both worlds!

We have a variety of implants for you to feel when you come visit us for your consultation so you can make the best choice for you. In bodybuilders and very athletic women with little fat, an implant is usually the only way to add volume to the breasts. In bodybuilders in particular, we can discuss placing the implants in a way that is unlikely to affect your bench press strength.

Natural Breast Augmentation with Fat Grafting

This can be a good option to augment the breasts without the need of traditional incisions or implants. Good candidates are patients with adequate fat deposits in the abdomen, love handles, or thighs. This scarless technique provides modest volume and lift that can be repeated several weeks later for added effect. Procedure times can vary based on the amount of fat to be transferred. We are uniquely safe in our approach and prefer using a closed system for fat harvest, processing, and grafting – your fat remains sterile as it is processed and injected back into you without ever being exposed to the air in the operating room.

An added bonus is being able to remove the fat from somewhere you would like to slim down, the choice is yours! For significantly sagging breasts this technique may need to be performed after a breast lift.

Breast Augmentation Rapid Recovery

After the operating room, you will be taken to a recovery area to be cared for. You will go home the same day or recover in a hotel if you have traveled in from out of town. You will have a supportive non-wire bra and perhaps other supportive dressings.

We offer less traumatic techniques and long-acting numbing medication to help you have a rapid recovery. We let you shower starting the next day, and most patients can return to work 48 hours after surgery. Some swelling is expected and as each side can swell differently, minor asymmetries may come and go until they are fully healed.

Antibiotics are generally given on the day of surgery and in cases with implants they may be beneficial to take after surgery as well. We find that most of our patients do not need opioids after surgery and do well with Tylenol, ibuprofen, and non-drowsy pain medications.. After surgery, you may have minor bruising and soreness for several days.

Regular walking is encouraged to prevent blood clots, starting the morning after surgery. It is common to restrict your return to high-impact exercises like running and jumping in order to prevent unnecessary pull on your incisions if need be. You will receive after-care instructions before and after your surgery and have plenty of time to ask questions.

We generally like to check on you in person in the week after surgery. We will schedule additional visits to check on your healing progress, which can be done virtually if you live out of town. Healing takes time and your breast shape can take several weeks to reach the intended appearance.
